WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Using Rome as a backdrop, we will discover sources of inspiration, collecting ideas and reference to work through in our sketchbooks. Bringing together different threads to create a composition/narrative. Working in different media: pencil, ink, charcoal to bring ideas to life. You will adopt a creative flow to develop a way of working that is informal and relies on exploration and personal expression rather than a formal academic approach.

During week one we will build a library of visual and conceptual reference based on life drawing and museum and gallery experiences in Rome. You’ll create a sketchbook of ideas to act as a source of inspiration for a final drawing. As we are based in Rome, we would be ideally placed to explore our environment and get inspired! As well as the scheduled museum visits, the workshop could visit other sites to sketch, take pictures, find inspiration. We will visit archaeological sites and museums as well as working with live models. to create a library of poses and figure reference during the first week.

In week two we will bring some of those ideas and references together in sketches aimed at working towards a final piece. And then the final four days will be spent working on a final drawing.

This course will entail a total of ten studio days, six hours per day, supplemented by trips to museums, churches, and historical sites. Materials are not included. On May 5 at 7 PM there will be a brief orientation and group meeting to get acquainted. Class begins on Monday, May 6 at 9 AM. May 18 will be the last day for a final critique, packing drawings, and a group dinner at night. Each day will be a full experience from morning to night!

CRAWW BIO:

https://www.craww.com/

Living on the edge of the Peak District in the UK and surrounded by hills, woods and open moorland, Craww’s work reflects an ongoing fascination with the natural world, and the relationships we have with it.

His work creates narratives that are drawn from the beauty to be found in contradictions and ambiguity - life and death, beauty and decay, strength, fragility, the interplay between conflicting and complementing forces of nature and the constructs that mark our passing.

Each piece is a story, or an aspect of an unfolding story that writes itself as he works on it. As his muses pass through time and place they are accompanied in their journey by birds and animals. Often framed by classical and historical reference points and surrounded by flowing lines and natural forms, Craww works to uncover their ambiguous connections and hidden narratives and explore how the passage of time shapes the relationship between ourselves and nature..

With successful shows in the UK and US, he has found collectors and fans around the world.
