WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This is a unique opportunity to join two world-renowned artists in a single class! Join David and Shana as they lead students to create long-form portrait drawings and paintings from life in the studio. Students will also spend a few days drawing the art, architecture, and people of Rome in the field sketchbooks with David and Shana.

The focus of this workshop will be advanced life painting and drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression, and emotion of the modern portrait. Students will work to develop clarity of vision essential for accurate observation; learning to focus on what is in front of them without being overwhelmed. Through this intensive observation, students will explore the uniqueness of individual features and their relationship to each other as part of a coherent whole. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the structure of the model, as well as the artist’s analysis and interpretation. All questions will be answered both visually and verbally. The majority of instruction will be one-on-one coaching, in order to help diagnose any stumbling blocks that students may have.

Students will use the method of relative sizing to transcribe the portrait to their paper. Class discussions will include how to accurately judge values, edges, and forms while working from life. This workshop aims to guide students toward creating a drawing and painting from life using traditional techniques. Shana and David will demo from the model for the first three hours of class and the students will work the second three hours of class with individual guided instruction.

This course includes a total of ten days of art instruction either in the studio with a live model or drawing in the city sites of Rome, six hours per day, supplemented by trips to museums, churches, and historical sites. Paints and medium are included. On the final day, there will be a group dinner. On May 19 at 7 PM there will be a brief orientation and group meeting to get acquainted. Painting begins on Monday, May 20. June 1 will be the last day for a final critique, packing paintings, and a group dinner at night. Each day will be a full experience from morning to night!
